Living the Low Life

This year is going to be my year for change. I have changed the way I eat, I have changed my goals, I have changed my university degree and I have changed how I look at my Type 1 Diabetes.

These changes weren't easy and I still have many decisions and changes to make until I can get where I want, however my start has been successful, if not a little bumpy.

My family and friends took a while to get their head around my Low Carbohydrate way of eating, but with the help of Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution I could show them exactly the reasons I was cutting out all the 'fun' foods.

I'm not going to list here all the pros and cons of my way of eating (maybe another time), however I will say that by greatly lowering my carbohydrate intake I've been able to finally control my blood sugar levels and stop the rollercoaster spikes and lows I used to see. I can spend my day feeling awake and energised instead of post meal fuzziness and exercise is no longer a time to gamble. (I still find control during exercise my biggest challenge but with trial and error I'll get there.)

I've started this blog to document my progress, challenges, tried and approved recipes and travelling times throughout my Diabetes battle and to hopefully show my improving blood glucose control.

Story so far:
Diagnosed- October 28th 2014
HBA1C at diagnosis- 8.9%
Units of Insulin on high carbohydrate diet: 13U Lantas at 8am, 1U for 10g Carbohydrate.

I started lowering my carbohydrates to around 20-25g per day in May 2016
Units of Insulin
6.5U Lantus at 6:30am + 1U novorapid
0.5-1U novorapid when I get up + 1U per 5g carbs+'protein carb' for breakfast
1U novorapid for 12g carbs+'protein carb' for lunch
1U novorapid for 12g carbs+'protein carb' for dinner
5.5U lantus at 10:30,

I have really learnt a lot in the past few months about my blood glucose, and I've begun to accept that a lot of work has to go in to achieve normal (3.9-6) blood glucose levels.

However I'm nowhere near perfect yet and every day I'm making improvements.
